Virginia is a U.S. state located in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions of the country. It is the 12th most populous state in the U.S. with 8.5 million inhabitants. The state is bordered by Washington, D.C., Maryland, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Virginia is home to a number of major cities and tourist attractions, including its capital, Richmond, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Chesapeake Bay, and the many beaches along its Atlantic coast. It is also home to one of the nation's largest aquatic preserves, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
