Virginia Beach, situated on the coast of Virginia in the southeastern part of the United States, is an independent city with a population of 459,470 as of 2020. Despite being largely suburban, it is Virginia's most populous city, the fifth most populous city in the Mid-Atlantic, the ninth most populous in the Southeast, and the 42nd most populous city in the United States. Virginia Beach is also the largest city in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. "America's First Region," which includes various smaller towns, counties, and independent cities such as Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk, is the area's collective name.
Virginia Beach, situated on a lengthy coastline, is a popular vacation spot with miles of beaches and a plethora of hotels, motels, and restaurants. The city is also home to state parks, protected beaches, military bases, large corporations, Virginia Wesleyan University, Regent University, Christian Broadcasting Network's international headquarters and television broadcast studios, Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment, and nuffield health. Annually, Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships and the Something in the Water music festival. On April 26, 1607, English colonists first landed at Cape Henry, where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, before settling in Jamestown.
